Hello Plankton!
Until July 20, the BiotopiaLab is presenting the pop-up exhibition Hello Plankton! – All About Plankton, a fascinating and diverse group of tiny marine organisms that, surprisingly, aren’t very good swimmers! Despite their small size, plankton play a crucial role in the health of our planet.
The exhibition takes visitors into the magical world of these often-invisible organisms with "superpowers." It connects their stories with exciting, up-to-date research and makes science accessible and easy to understand.
The exhibition is based on the book Hello Plankton!, which has been nominated for the 2025 German Youth Literature Award. In it, author and illustrator Kristina Heldmann combines art and science with colorful illustrations and easy-to-understand, entertaining texts. The exhibition highlights two current research projects by Prof. Iñaki Ruiz-Trillo(University of Barcelona) and Prof. Annika Guse (LMU Munich). Live plankton can be observed under a microscope, and there’s also a memory game featuring planktonic superheroes and scratchboard cards for drawing your own brightly colored plankton.
We are currently in the middle of the UN Decade of Ocean Science – a global initiative seeking science-based solutions to protect our oceans. Inspired by the question, “How can we get from the ocean we have to the ocean we want?”, Hello Plankton! offers an entertaining and inspiring introduction to the topic of oceans and biodiversity – and shows why they are so important for life on our planet.
